USA - NEW YORK, ENJOY THE BIG APPLE

Overview

Normally when we think about New York, images we have seen on television pop in to our heads: brick walls, metal stairs, steaming sewers, giant ads on rooftops and of course yellow taxi cabs. But way beyond stereotypes, New York is a real melting pot, a city where cultures intertwine and most of all, that never sleeps.

Many agree that New York City is more international than American. It is home to as many immigrants as Los Angeles and if you walk along the street, you’ll probably listen to hundreds of different languages. Neighborhoods that concentrate different cultures from around the world have emerged throughout the city, for example Chinatown and little Italy, not to mention corneas, Porto Ricans, Africans, Jews, Polish and Russians that have transformed different parts of the city in to their new home.

“New York is a city built under the sign of the modern times. It’s a catastrophe, a beautiful and graceful one”. (Le Corbusier)

Located in the state of New York, on the Atlantic coast, the city represents the great megalopolis of the East Coast of the United States. The year 2000, this urban area had a population of 21 199 865, whereas the city, 8 085742 spread throughout 5 boroughs: Manhattan, the most famous and interesting one if you are staying for short period of time, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island.

Manhattan
The island of Manhattan is the richest borough in NYC and also by far the most famous one, mainly because it’s where most of the tallest skyscrapers in the world are. It is also the world’s most important financial center, where many important issues are decided, all of which transforms it in to a very powerful place. In Manhattan you’ll find the majority of the city’s attractions, including Broadway and Madison Square Garden.

The Bronx
Has longly been considered the poorest borough in NYC, something that has started to change, since the municipality has helped the Bronx become a very attractive place to visit. It is known as the birthplace of hip-hop culture, nowadays world famous and home to the Hispanic and African American culture. It is also the place to come if you want to visit the Yankee Stadium and enjoy one of their famous games.

Brooklyn
Mainly a residential area, which transforms it in to the most populated neighborhood in the city. This is where one of the few beaches in NYC is located.

Queens
Considered a residential and industrial area, it is known for being the biggest borough in New York. This is where the US Open Grand Slam Tournament is held.

Staten Island
Due to its distant geographical location, it is the less integrated borough of New York City. One of the longest suspension bridges in the world, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, connects Staten Island with Brooklyn.

Music

The city gives music a really important space (for example a large number of different jazz clubs), not to mention that music its self has been inspired by New York and its neighborhoods, people and unique atmosphere. The most famous song is probably New York, New York, composed by John Kander, written by Fred Ebb and later interpreted by Frank Sinatra, a tune that glorifies New York as the seductive city where anything is possible.

Most jazz musicians started their careers in the Big Apple, a term used to describe the city, particularly the neighborhood of Harlem, considered the worlds capital of jazz. It has been said that the tree of success has many apples, but if one picks one from New York City, you would surely pick the Big Apple. This is why famous jazz composers worshiped the city through their music: Vernon Duke, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Amstrong, Duke Elington, Oscar Peterson, and Chet Baker, among many others.

On the other hand, Hip-Hop has evolved simultaneously right in the heart of New York. Different subjects like violence or life on the streets have inspired many songs. Since those early days, violence and crime has gone down, but hip-hop culture will always be present on the some of New York’s streets. Some famous authors are: O’Dirty Bastard, Jay-Z, KRS-One, Mobb Deep, 50Cent and Busta Rimes.
